The Heartbreak Run has been a much-loved feature of life at Glenalmond College since its introduction in 2016. Held on the final Sunday of the Michaelmas Term, the demanding 8.3mile course, with more than 1,100 feet of elevation gain, offers a formidable test of endurance and determination. What began as a small event involving just 12 pupils and staff has grown steadily each year.
This year’s run took place in particularly challenging conditions, with thick fog and very wet ground underfoot. Despite this, an impressive 60 runners took part, including 53 pupils from Third to Sixth Form, two Old Glenalmondians and five members of staff.

OG Jamie Sandison claimed first place, finishing in a time of 1:10:54. The first boys home were Christian R and Jakob S, who crossed the line together in a photo finish in 1:11:49. The first female finisher was Sarah K, an exchange pupil from St Anne’s Diocesan College in South Africa, undeterred by the cold Scottish conditions.
The College community is extremely grateful to all the families and friends who supported this year’s chosen charity, Children of Heroes. Together, over £700 was raised. Sincere thanks are also extended to the team of dedicated staff who ensured the event ran smoothly and safely.
Next year will mark the tenth anniversary of the Heartbreak Run, and the College would be delighted to welcome back as many OGs as possible, particularly past winners. Those interested in taking part are encouraged to contact [email protected]
