The Glenalmond College Drama Department aims to provide a rich and dynamic theatrical curriculum that inspires pupils to explore their dramatic and expressive capabilities while celebrating and appreciating the performing arts and the social and cultural development of all students.

The department energises pupils by offering a wide range of theatrical opportunities, instilling confidence in every student, not just in their Drama lessons but in all their pursuits.

From the junior years through to GCSE and A Level, we encourage pupils to develop their skills, interests, and enjoyment of Drama through practical activities that complement and inform their written work. The practical coursework at both GCSE and A Level allows students to be assessed as actors, lighting and sound technicians, or costume and set designers. The Drama and Theatre A Level course also provides a pathway to university for a wide range of subjects, predominantly in the arts and humanities.

We also offer Drama scholarships for aspiring pupils with outstanding talent and ability, enabling them to meet the professional standards set by the performing arts industry. This program includes access to free LAMDA tuition, acting masterclasses, professional theatre workshops, and opportunities to experience and appreciate a broader range of theatrical performances.

The department supports an active extra-curricular program and many house events, particularly the highly competitive annual inter-house drama, dance, and singing competitions. Pupils eagerly participate in high-quality productions staged in our 200-seat theatre. Numerous students audition for and take part in both Senior and Junior Productions, which provide young performers and designers the chance to develop and hone their skills and talents. Recent major productions have included ‘The Railway Children’, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘Treasure Island’, and ‘We Will Rock You’. The success of our shows results from a collaborative effort among the cast, technical crew, production team, and our backstage and front-of-house teams.

In addition to school productions, students can opt for LAMDA lessons, which are highly sought after and perfect for developing confidence, communication, and self-reflection skills. With classes in Acting, Public Speaking, and Communication, pupils can tailor their experience to match their interests. LAMDA is a globally recognised qualification, and the certificates are acknowledged by UCAS for university entry in the UK, awarding UCAS tariff points equivalent to A Levels, thus helping students meet entry requirements.

The Drama Department welcomes everyone, regardless of their talents, and encourages all students to achieve their full potential.
