cross country co-curricular

After months of hill training around Glenalmond, last weekend saw a major highlight in the cross-country calendar – our annual participation in the Scottish Islands Peaks Race. This famously challenging event combines sailing and running across three Scottish islands.  Glenalmond were one of only five schools to take part this year.

Our student team – Anton, Bettina, Clara, Josh, Laith, and Mathilde – travelled to Oban on Thursday, where they completed registration and a mandatory kit check. They spent the day adjusting to life on board Taeping, practising dinghy skills and soaking up the race atmosphere.

The race began on Friday with a 7K run through Oban, completed by Bettina and Clara. Despite a few wrong turns (and a couple of ticks), they returned to the boat, ready for the sailing leg. Under the guidance of skipper Glenn, the team made good time to Mull, starting the next stage alongside many other youth teams.

Mathilde and Laith took on the 19-mile Mull run with Mr Smith, cheered on by the ever-enthusiastic Spence family. Their pace slowed on the ascent of Beinn Talaidh, but they persevered and descended back to Salen as darkness fell.

Due to very light winds, the decision was made to withdraw from the sailing race, and the team motored to Jura. There, Anton, Josh and Mr Binnington tackled the tough 13-mile route over the Paps in the heat. They took full advantage of the terrain and managed a mid-run dip in a handy lochan to cool off.

The final run took place on Arran at dawn on Sunday, with Bettina, Clara, and Dr Fleming embarking on the 20-mile Goatfell challenge. The climb, the descent, and everything in between proved unforgettable, and the trio were rewarded with ice cream and a dip in the sea at the finish.

The team concluded their journey at the official finish line in Troon, greeted by pizza and proud parents.

Over the weekend, each team member was tested both physically and mentally. They faced challenges, pushed through setbacks, and discovered resilience and strength they may not have known they had. We hope this is an experience they’ll carry with them for years to come.

Huge thanks to Ocean Sailing, who have supported us for many years, to the dedicated staff who accompanied the team, and to the parents and families who encouraged and supported the pupils throughout their training and the race itself.
